I remember a training session with an experienced sales consultant at a car dealership in Spiez. Technically, he was brilliant and his advice was on equal footing with the customers. His closing rate was excellent, but when the topic of referrals came up, I saw uncertainty in his eyes for the first time.

“I know it would be important,” he said, “but somehow it feels like begging.”

An honest statement. And one I hear again and again in my sales training sessions. Because although 91% of customers say they trust recommendations from friends the most, according to a Nielsen study, only 11% of salespeople actively seek referrals (source: Dale Carnegie Sales Index, 2023).

Why this discrepancy?

Because many salespeople have learned to want to persuade, but haven’t learned how to leverage trust. Because asking for a referral often feels like dependency, rather than what it actually is: an expression of trust.

Let’s imagine a typical situation: The customer is satisfied and the deal is closed. Everything is perfect, and then… nothing more happens. The salesperson politely thanks the customer, says goodbye, and thus misses the opportunity to reach the next prospect directly via the shortest route: through the satisfied customer themselves.

Studies by Harvard Business Review (2022) show that:
• Referrals convert 4x better than leads from other sources
• The closing rate for referral leads is over 60%, compared to an average of 20-30% for cold calling
• And: Customers who come via referrals remain loyal longer and buy more frequently.

Yet, in practice, I often see sales teams that haven’t developed a culture of referrals. They ask too late or not at all. Or, worse still, they rely on automated emails with links to review portals, which come across as mass-generated messages. The crucial human element is lost in the process.

What’s the solution?

Referrals must become part of the sales conversation. Those who have professionally guided their customers can and should conclude the conversation with a clear “May I ask you something?”—with the same confidence as in a price negotiation.

In our FinOptima training courses, we focus precisely on this. We show how to naturally integrate referrals, prepare them strategically, and place them honestly, without a script, but with real impact.

Because one thing is certain: trust is the most valuable currency in sales. Those who receive it freely should be able to use it – respectfully, consistently, and with empathy.

And when was the last time you actively asked for a referral after closing a deal?

Unleashing potential – celebrating success.
