The client was thrilled:
“We want practical sales training for our entire sales team, 23 people spread across Europe. And this live from our headquarters in St. Gallen. You moderate, we stream. No problem for you, right, Mr. Iaderosa?”

Of course not. I love challenges like that.
And yet, this project turned into a real test of skill. And it had me sweating bullets more than once!

The idea:
An interactive, multilingual sales training that simultaneously reaches participants from 12 countries, broadcast live from the client’s conference room. Live coaching, role-playing, group work via breakout rooms. All remote. All synchronized.

The stumbling blocks?
– The client’s internet connection was… ambitious.
– The internal IT department was hesitant: “Zoom? Teams? Better not install anything new.”
– Some participants, especially from Southern and Eastern Europe, had unstable connections, some had no microphone, some didn’t even have a webcam. Not exactly helpful.
– Three participants contacted us by mobile phone from their cars while driving.
– The company failed to send basic instructions (despite an agreement!): no information on minimum requirements, no technical checklist, and no clarity regarding expectations.
– Two participants were conspicuous by their lack of attendance.
– One participant did not speak English.
– The first interactive exercise failed due to VPN issues.

What absolutely must be considered for such projects?
– Binding minimum requirements for technology, participation quality, and setting, clearly communicated in advance.
– A technical test run, not just for me, but for all participants.
– An IT contact person who can provide live support during the training.
– Backup plans for tools, content, and interactions; thinking offline, even if it’s online.
– A preliminary warm-up to reduce any apprehension about the camera, microphone, and platform.
– Interactive design with a Plan B – because if the internet fails, alternatives are needed that still deliver results.

At the end, the sales manager said,
“That was the most personal virtual training we’ve ever experienced. It really resonated with us.”

My conclusion:
Connection requires more than just technology. It requires clarity, preparation, and genuine interest in the other person. And checks and balances!
If you want to make an impact, you have to enable it.
